Cinderella (2015) > Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Narratively speaking, I thought it was so much more put together. The world was more coherent and contained to me and that made the story better. By keeping the number of characters who are fleshed out somewhat limited (while still making them more dynamic than the stock characters that permeate fairy tales), the message of the movie was kept concentrated, ie. it remained the focal of the story as any good fairy tale ought to.
Also, the acting was just so genuine. What could have been campy or cheesy felt so sincere largely because of the way that all of the actors embraced their characters and the world they lived in. The acting in Beauty and the Beast wasn’t necessarily bad but at times it felt like they were pretending, condescending to a child audience.
But I think sincerity is needed not just in children’s films, but in all films. Sarcasm is cheap when we apply it to everything. Cynicism is easy. Teach children how to look for what’s Good and True. And while we’re at it, remind adults of what Hope and Forgiveness look like.

my mind, on an endless loop from now until the day I die: but why didn’t Netflix promote Sense8? Why did Stranger Things get a Superbowl ad and a Netflix countdown banner for a week? Why did they renew 13 Reasons Why for three seasons even though it had already adapted its entire source material? How is it that Supernatural and Grey’s Anatomy have been running for so long that some of their fans were born after their premiere dates and yet Sense8 was cut short after 2 seasons? Why was Sense8 so “confusing” and “depressing” to some viewers when the concept is no more complex or upsetting than Game of Thrones and Westworld? What kind of intersectional science fiction masterpiece might Sense8 have become if not forced to cram 3 seasons of content into 2.5 hours? Why was Sense8 so slept on while hundreds of other milquetoast shows continue to get hype –
